Scotland, July 29 – U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a new deadline of “10 or 12 days” for Russia to agree to a peace deal in Ukraine or face harsh sanctions, expressing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s prolonging of the war, according to Al Jazeera.
Speaking in Scotland during meetings with European leaders, Trump said he had shortened a previously set 50-day deadline due to a lack of progress. “There’s no reason to wait. We just don’t see anything moving,” he told reporters alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s firm position, saying it showed “clear determination” to end the war and save lives. “This comes at a crucial moment when real peace can still be achieved through strength,” Zelenskyy said.
The Kremlin has not responded publicly, but former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticized Trump’s stance on X, warning that ultimatums could escalate into direct conflict with the U.S.
Later, Zelenskyy reiterated that sanctions were a “key element” to pressuring Moscow. “Russia pays attention to sanctions, to such losses,” he stated in his nightly address.
Trump, while threatening new tariffs and sanctions, also noted, “I don’t want to do that to Russia. I love the Russian people.” He added that despite past hopes for resolution, Russia’s continued attacks on civilian targets have dashed expectations.
