Hetauda, July 29: Bahadur Singh Lama, the leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party in Bagmati Province, has lost the party’s confidence.
In a vote held within the parliamentary party on Tuesday, Lama secured only 15 votes in his favor, while 22 votes were cast against him, according to Suraj Chandra Lamichhane, a parliamentarian and former minister. With this, Lama has effectively lost his position as the party leader.
Lawmakers who had filed a no-confidence motion against Lama—who also serves as the Chief Minister of Bagmati Province—have proposed Indra Bahadur Baniya, a provincial assembly member and president of the Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Committee, as his replacement.
As Lama has lost the party’s trust and 22 lawmakers are now backing Baniya, moral pressure is mounting on him to resign as Chief Minister and hand over leadership of the provincial government to Baniya.
