Course Correction

A large number of potential citizens of Nepal have gone abroad for better study, better jobs and better lifestyles. Nothing to hide that our journalists are sold out, that even the political leaders and academicians believe. This is not a speculation but is exposed by those who have sponsored them. Our academicians speak the voice of different INGOs. Political parties in the government and opposition are always busy in the topple games and all are involved in corruption, commission and other scandals. Patriotic people are unorganized and thus weak. The country’s economy is heading towards the wrong path and, surely, it will face an accident shortly. The situation is whether we will remain a sovereign citizen of a sovereign nation or not!

The scenario is very hopeless, yet, better late than never, there left some hopes for a course correction. Rastriya Janamorcha’s chairman and MP Chitra Bahadur KC, addressing the House meeting, said that we cannot burden such expensive provincial structures. “How long should we burden the provincial structures by taking foreign debts,” KC has questioned. Nepali Congress’ senior leader Sekhar Koirala opined that the present election system will not ensure a single-party majority and cannot give a stable government. Without a stable government, development is not possible, he remarked. None other than the point-man of the Indo-West front, MP and youth leader Gagan Thapa suggested changing the election system for political stability. Thapa, the NC MP, has further suggested to amend the constitution in collaboration with the UML. From such voices, we should understand that now, the foreign powers too have started to think about amendment of the constitution. Understandably, they are talking about partial amendment of the constitution, which is not enough and an overhaul of the system is needed. Yes, a large group in the Nepali Congress are in favor of the 1990 constitution ensuring a multiparty system with a constitutional monarchy. Moreover, the group supports a modest Hindu kingdom agenda. In the UML also, a large number of leaders accept the 1990 constitution. All the Tarai-based parties, except those funded by the Western INGOs, are in favor of the 1990 constitution. Therefore, the 1990 constitution could be an alternative to the present constitution which is non-functional.

To conclude, we need a sustainable political system ensuring the nation’s sovereignty and independence; we need a political system which can ensure our pride in being a Nepali.
