Nepal-India relations

EDITORIAL

Our kings struggled hard to keep Nepal a sovereign and independent nation. Nepal maintained a non-aligned foreign policy, and especially with the two giant nations, India and China, Nepal maintained equidistance relations. For Nepal, both immediate neighbours are important. Both countries are emerging powers, and we cannot discard one country by taking the side of another country. The Indians are demonstrating their hegemony in Nepal, saying that they are concerned about the increasing presence of China and the West here, which is against Nepal’s independent existence. If India is concerned about the security threats, it should shut down or regulate its international borders with Nepal. Nepal can initiate its foreign policy independently; however, it should remain sensitive to the concerns of both neighbours.

The Nepali leaders, first of all, should try to realize that they are representing Nepal and they should be responsible towards Nepal and the Nepali nationals. They should not be loyal to a particular foreign country.

Last week, when Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was in Kathmandu, we saw a very humiliating state of the Nepali leaders. Our former prime ministers were in a queue to meet the Indian foreign minister at a Hotel’s lobby, which is very insulting.

More seriously, the Nepal government permitted India to spend 20 crore rupees worth of projects directly by the Indian Embassy without a notice to the Nepal government. This is against the Nepali sovereignty. We strongly oppose the Nepal government’s decision to accept such projects. Instead of looking towards foreign funding, Nepal must strengthen its economy by reducing non-productive sector expenditure and increasing development expenditure. Nepal should be able to raise its concerns on the international platform rather than becoming the puppet of India. First of all, we must become clear that the Indian plan is to ruin the Nepali economy, occupying all the rivers for the use of irrigation, drinking water and water needed for the Indian rivers to operate small and middle-sized ships. Indians have spoiled our leaders and used them in the Indian interests, which is not a hidden issue now.

The leaders want to enjoy power by pleasing India. In this process, one after another leaders are in a race to please the Indian leaders. They have listed their names in the category of traitors. The leaders should realize how the coming generation will identify them in the history of Nepal.
