NC likely to become a decisive party again

By Our Reporter

When the ruling Nepal Communist Party is on the verge of split, Nepali Congress having only 62 members in the 275-member House of Representatives is likely to emerge as a decisive force as none of the rival factions (if NCP splits) of NCP will be able to form a new government without having NC support. PM Oli has hinted at this by frequently meeting NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba after the dispute surfaced in the NCP. Even secret meetings between the two leaders were reported in recent days. Besides, Oli also sent Subas Nembang to meet Deuba after the dispute deepened in the party.

Now NCP has 174 seats in House of representatives, and if the party got divided, Oli’s group is likely to have 100-105 lawmakers and Prachanda camp 70-75. Hence, both groups needs NC support to form a government. NC has now 63 members (two suspended and one dead), Janatasamajwadi Party 34 and four independent members.

If the NCP splits, Oli will form a government in the support of NC and Janata Samajwadi Party. Even Prachanda-led group will try to form the government but cannot unless NC agrees to support him. A situation may arise in which both factions will offer the post of PM to NC to form the government and Deuba may become PM in the support of either faction.

But within NC, majority may oppose the idea of joining the government because NC is not also free from dispute. However, considering the nature of NC boss Deuba, NC is more likely to join or lead the government.

Hence, it is almost sure that NC will become the kingmaker if the ruling NCP suffers a split at present.
