After the then prime minister Baburam Bhattarai suspended Daura-Surwal and Gunai-Chholi as the national dress, some spontaneous youths launched a campaign to observe 1 January as the national cap day since January 2070.
Since then, the first day of the English New Year is being observed as the national cap day. Today, although the government has not adopted this event as the national day, the entire Nepali people observed the event as a festival worldwide.
The campaigners, after the success of the event among the mass, have announced to observe 1 Baisakh (mid-April, Nepali New Year) as the national dress day and urged all the Nepalis to wear Daura-Surwal and Gunau-Chholi on the day.
The campaigners have stated that this dress is the Nepali identity.
Speaking at a function organised to mark the national cap day, CPN leader BhimRawal criticized BaburamBhattarai for scrapping national dress (Daura-Surwal and Guanu-Chholi), which is the Nepali identity.
