Kathmandu, Sept 20: Nepali Communist Party leader Barshaman Pun has predicted a large public uprising against the government after Dashain, Tihar and Chhath.
Speaking at a programme organised by the party’s Gandaki Province Liaison Committee in Kathmandu on Saturday, Pun accused the government of acting arbitrarily and irresponsibly. He urged party members to prepare now to lead people who might take to the streets.
“What has this government done to provide rescue and relief after the Rasuwa flood? People have no cooking gas, farmers have no fertiliser, and prices have soared. What has it done?” Pun asked. He said public anger and frustration would bring people into the streets after the festivals and that his party should be ready to organise them.
Pun also claimed that the government’s actions had weakened Nepal’s sovereignty and independence.
He accused those who had portrayed the past 35 years as a curse on the country of appointing people who held senior administrative and military posts during that same period. Most of the recent ambassadorial appointments had gone to such people, he said.
Pun said his party was working to rebuild and strengthen its organisation, unite leftist forces, cooperate with democratic parties and build international support for the political system and constitution.
He claimed that the Rastriya Swatantra Party had used what he called the “three Ds”, youth demographics, digital transformation and the diaspora, to spread the impression that established parties had achieved nothing in 35 years. His party, he said, was developing a plan to build a stronger presence in those areas.
Pun said the party aimed to ensure that young people hold 50 per cent of positions across its structures after its next general convention. It would also raise the concerns of Nepalis living abroad for work or study. People aged 15 to 39 make up 45 per cent of Nepal’s population, he said, adding that the party was discussing ways to bring them into leadership roles.
