Kathmandu, September 19: The Government of Japan has provided emergency grant worth USD 1 million through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions for communities affected by the recent flash floods in Nepal.
The assistance will focus on the critical WASH sector, including access to safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion. These interventions are essential to preventing the spread of waterborne diseases and protecting the health and well-being of affected communities during humanitarian emergencies
During his visit to Nuwakot, Umeda Naoto, first secretary, Embassy of Japan, visited flood-affected areas and observed ongoing humanitarian response efforts, including emergency clinic and displacement sites and placement of emergency water tanks. He expressed his hope that the WASH interventions provide immediate, life-saving assistance by restoring essential services and addressing urgent needs in flood affected communities.
David Fisher, head of delegation, IFRC Nepal said: “The catastrophic floods have not only destroyed homes and livelihoods, they have also cut off access to essential healthcare and safe water for thousands of people. Without immediate action, the risk of disease outbreaks can increase rapidly. The support of the Japanese Government is critical at this time, enabling us to respond quickly and effectively. Together with the Nepal Red Cross Society, we are restoring access to clean drinking water and essential healthcare services for affected communities.”
The Embassy has hoped that the prompt implementation of these programs will contribute to stabilizing affected communities, reducing health risks, and supporting their recovery and resilience in the aftermath of the disaster.
