Kathmandu, Sept 19: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has urged the government to raise issues concerning Nepal’s interests effectively at the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Friday, Thapa said Nepal’s delegation should represent the entire country and reflect the sentiments of all Nepalis.
He was addressing the 18th edition of “The Green Table”, a dialogue titled “Stirrings in the Himalayas: Bhotekoshi’s Warning and the World’s Shared Responsibility”.
Thapa said Prime Minister Balendra Shah need not feel nervous about attending the General Assembly for the first time. He encouraged Shah to speak confidently, carrying forward the legacy of previous governments and setting a course for future ones.
He urged the government to seek advice from researchers studying the effects of climate change and present its case with supporting evidence. Nepal should clearly identify the issues it intends to raise and the causes it will fight for at the assembly, he said.
“What should we fight for at the General Assembly? The questions range from whether settlements should immediately be rebuilt in disaster-hit areas to how we can strengthen our institutions. Climate change must be at the centre of our agenda. We must present our case on the basis of evidence, not assumptions,” Thapa said.
