Kathmandu, Sept 16: A member of the House of Representatives has demanded that the government make public the investigation report on Home Minister Sudhan Gurung’s assets.
Nepali Congress lawmaker Narendra Kumar Kerung said the public has the right to know the findings of the probe into questions surrounding Gurung’s assets, share investments and links with businesspeople.
Gurung resigned as home minister on April 22, citing the need to avoid a conflict of interest and allow an impartial investigation into allegations concerning him. The government subsequently formed a three-member investigation committee led by former judge Achyut Prasad Bhandari.
The committee examined the minister’s assets, sources of income, loans, share investments and bank balances, among other matters, and submitted a 45 page report to the prime minister. The report has not been made public.
Kerung said the government’s decision to reappoint Gurung as home minister without releasing the report had raised questions about its commitment to transparency and good governance.
“We had thought his decision to pave the way for an investigation would mark the beginning of a political culture in a civilised society. He later returned as home minister without the report being made public. The public’s question now is not about the home minister’s personal assets, Mr Speaker, but about the government’s transparency and good governance,” he said.
Kerung also demanded that if the government cleared Gurung of wrongdoing based on the report, it should make public the grounds, evidence and statements on which that conclusion was reached.
