Kathmandu, Sept. 12: Severe flooding in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers has affected 12 hydropower projects, including eight operational and four under construction, with a combined installed capacity of 669 MW.
According to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), 909 people working at 11 of the affected projects remain unaccounted for. Hydropower projects in Rasuwa suffered the heaviest human losses.
The 216 MW under-construction Upper Trishuli 1 project in Rasuwa was destroyed. Of the 1,433 people working at the project before the flood, 878 have been rescued, and seven bodies recovered.
Among those still missing are nine South Koreans, 34 Chinese and 50 Indian nationals, according to IPPAN.
The 111 MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, which was in operation, was also completely affected, with 93 people reported missing.
Other affected projects include the 60 MW Upper Trishuli 3A, 37 MW Upper Trishuli 3B, 15.6 MW Middle Trishuli, 25 MW Ganga Hydropower, 120 MW Rasuwagadhi Bhotekoshi, 20 MW Langtang Khola, 22 MW Chilime and 5 MW Mailung Khola projects.
The Trishuli Hydropower Centre and 14.1 MW Devighat Hydropower Centre were also affected. Three people are missing from Trishuli, while one security guard is missing from Devighat.
