Kathmandu, Sept 5: Forty-four countries have made a collective call for justice for nations, including Nepal, that are facing disasters caused by climate change.
Expressing sorrow over the disaster caused by the Bhotekoshi flood, 44 least developed countries (LDCs) have expressed solidarity with Nepal.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the people of Nepal over the significant loss of life and property caused by the devastating floods recently triggered by landslides and falling rocks in the Himalayan region due to climate change,” they said. “There is a need for easier and enhanced access to quality climate finance, including grant-based resources, to address loss and damage in least developed countries.”
At a conference held in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, the 44 least developed countries called for countries with greater contributions to carbon emissions to provide compensation, saying that the climate crisis has pushed LDCs into an unnecessary burden of debt.
“The climate finance architecture needs to be transformed at a time when least developed countries are facing high capital costs and a heavy debt burden as a result of the climate crisis,” the declaration states.
The least developed countries have called for climate-related financing to reach at least US$128 billion annually by 2035.
They have also called for stronger measures to keep the rise in global temperatures below 1.5 degrees as part of efforts to mitigate the climate crisis. Based on their contributions to reducing carbon emissions, the LDCs have also called for greater opportunities for climate-related technology and investment to be created in these countries.
