Kathmandu, Sept 5: The bodies of 1,344 people who were caught in the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River have been recovered. According to the latest figures released by the Nepal Police, 4,898 people are still missing.
According to police, of the 1,344 bodies recovered, 489 are men, 269 are women, 52 are boys, and 33 are girls. Partial remains of another 501 victims have also been recovered, but their identities have yet to be established.
Of the 4,898 people reported missing, 2,930 are Nepali citizens, and 618 are foreign nationals. Among the missing Nepali citizens are 2,448 men and 482 women. Police said they received reports by phone regarding 1,350 missing people.
So far, 8,631 people have been rescued alive from the flood-affected areas. Those rescued include 7,387 Nepali citizens and 1,244 foreign nationals. A total of 3,655 displaced people are currently being housed at various holding centers.
A total of 7,212 police personnel have been deployed for search and rescue operations. During the rescue efforts, 65 police personnel have themselves been affected by the floods, while 25 police officers remain out of contact.
Of the recovered bodies, 1,030 have been buried and otherwise disposed of. DNA collection has also been accelerated to identify the deceased. So far, DNA samples have been collected from 2,232 people in total, including 1,260 deceased individuals and 972 relatives of the deceased. Details of 1,270 unidentified individuals have been uploaded to the website.
