Kathmandu, Aug 30: The government says rescue efforts are continuing for people trapped at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project, despite fresh flooding at the project site Sunday morning.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that rescue operations would continue while authorities closely assess the damage and overall situation at the project area.
“The government is maintaining full alert and preparing to mobilise excavators and heavy equipment again to clear mud and debris from the project site,” the statement said.
The government is also preparing to deploy a “Special Force” by helicopter to safely retrieve 19 CCTV cameras, HDR equipment and setup boxes controlling the tunnel portal and powerhouse, which have been buried under landslide debris and mud.
With road access to the project site blocked, a team will be airlifted by helicopter and dropped near the buried building to recover the critical equipment, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The government said rescue efforts for people stranded at the project site continued throughout Saturday night. However, another flood struck the area at around 4 am Sunday, causing the water level of the Trishuli River to rise by between five and 10 metres.
The sharp rise in the river level has also caused rapid erosion along the riverbank near the project area, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
