Kathmandu, Aug 29: Security forces have arrested 29 people allegedly involved in breaking open a bank vault swept downstream by floods from the Trishuli area and taking the cash inside.
The suspects were detained while allegedly breaking open the vault and illegally taking money from it after it was carried downstream by floods from Rasuwa and upper river areas.
A joint team of the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police arrested them during search and patrol operations. Police said they recovered Rs 9,268,505 in cash from those arrested.
According to Central Police Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Abinarayan Kafle, all 29 suspects have been held at the District Police Office in Dhading. Further investigation and legal proceedings are underway, he said.
Security agencies have also stepped up surveillance and patrols to prevent vandalism, theft and looting of government, commercial and private property taking advantage of the floods and disaster.
