Kathmandu, Aug 28: US President Donald Trump has pledged to provide Nepal with “any help that they need” following Wednesday’s devastating Bhotekoshi flash flood, NBC News reported.
Trump said the US had been in contact with Nepali officials and acknowledged that several Americans remain missing following the disaster.
“We’ve called Nepal, and we’ve offered any help that they need,” NBC News quoted Trump as saying.
The US State Department announced $500,000 in assistance on Thursday through its global award with Catholic Relief Services. The funding will support emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation and hygiene services for communities affected by the floods, according to the US Embassy in Kathmandu.
UAE announces $10 million aid
The United Arab Emirates has announced US$10 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal as the country deals with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides that have killed hundreds and left many people missing.
The assistance was announced under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and will be provided through the UAE Aid Agency as part of an urgent humanitarian response.
The agency said its teams are working with local authorities and international organisations to deliver relief to communities affected by the disaster, including women, men and children.
Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Amiri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, said the UAE remained committed to supporting global humanitarian efforts and stressed the need for international cooperation in responding to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
He also called for stronger collective action to ensure timely relief and support for people and communities affected by such disasters.
Sri Lanka to provide $1 million
Sri Lanka has announced US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal to support relief efforts following devastating floods and landslides that have caused deaths, displacement and widespread destruction.
According to a press release issued Thursday by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, President Anura Kumara Disanayaka directed the government to assist in a gesture of solidarity with Nepal.
The president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disasters and conveyed condolences from the Sri Lankan government and people to their Nepali counterparts, particularly the families who lost loved ones.
Disanayaka also recalled the longstanding friendship and solidarity between Sri Lanka and Nepal, saying Sri Lanka stood firmly with the Nepali people during their hour of need.
The financial contribution will support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the floods and landslides.
