Kathmandu, Aug 22: Police are investigating medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai in three cases involving sedition, the Electronic Transactions Act 2008 and offences against public peace, according to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.
On Thursday night, a joint team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and the District Police Range Bhaktapur raided Prasai’s residence. Police seized five mobile phones, a laptop and a device containing CCTV recordings.
SSP Santosh Khadka said the seized electronic devices had been sent to a forensic laboratory to examine Prasai’s communications and contacts.
Prasai has repeatedly made allegations against government ministers. A few weeks ago, he accused Home Minister Sudan Gurung of being a member of BRAG, which he described as an organisation involved in supporting and bringing Rohingya refugees into Nepal and India.
Prasai also alleged that Rohingya refugees had been deliberately brought to Sunsari to defame Nepali Muslims and create divisions in a society that had been living peacefully. Police intensified their investigation following these statements.
Prasai is also facing an earlier case related to the violent pro monarchy demonstration in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28, 2025. A case was filed against him and 49 others on charges including criminal disturbance, culpable homicide, attempted murder, sedition and organised crime.
Two people, Avenue Television cameraman Suresh Rajak and protester Sabin Maharjan, were killed during the violence, while more than 110 people were injured. The clashes also involved arson and property damage.
The Kathmandu District Court recently ordered the case to be submitted for trial after the detention period expired.
Nepal’s sedition provisions are contained in Section 50 of the National Penal Code, 2017. The law provides for up to 25 years in prison for attempts to overthrow the government or constitutional institutions through force or conspiracy.
