Shashank to NC members: Don’t attend 15th general convention

Kathmandu, Aug 22: Nepali Congress former General Secretary Shashank Koirala has issued a statement in the name of the “15th General Convention Preparation Committee”, urging party members not to participate in the upcoming general convention.

Koirala said that if the party committee formed through the special general convention proceeds with the general convention, the process of division will begin across all party structures. He therefore urged party members not to attend the convention.

The Nepali Congress is scheduled to hold its 15th general convention from October 2 to 5.

Former General Secretary Koirala has been leading the non-establishment faction along with outgoing party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. A national gathering was also held under his chairmanship from August 14 to 16. The gathering insisted that the 15th general convention should be held under Deuba’s leadership.

The Deuba faction today approached the Supreme Court seeking an order to stop the 15th general convention, but the writ petition has not yet been registered.

The Deuba faction went to the Supreme Court arguing that the general convention should not be held while the court has granted permission to review the dispute over the party’s official status. Former minister Dipak Khadka reached the Supreme Court with the writ petition. The court said the matter was still under study.

Before approaching the Supreme Court, outgoing party president Deuba and leader Shekhar Koirala had also held a meeting. Soon afterward, leaders held discussions at Shashank Koirala’s residence as well.

The Deuba faction did not participate in the special general convention held in December.
