Kathmandu, Aug 16: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shashank Koirala has made it clear that he is not in favour of splitting the party or forming a new political party.
Addressing a national gathering of the opposition faction in Kathmandu on Saturday, Koirala stressed the need to reform and adapt the party to changing times. He said potential disputes within the party could be resolved through dialogue.
Speaking about the upcoming 15th general convention, Koirala said he has a good understanding with party leader Dr Shekhar Koirala. He added that he would support Shekhar if he decides to contest for party president.
“I am not at all in favour of splitting the party or forming a new party. We must reform the party in line with the aspirations of the people. I am interested in the post of party president, but my personal interest alone is not enough. I will consult with my colleagues and make a decision based on their suggestions,” he said.
Koirala said development should be the central focus of a new and organised Nepali Congress.
“People will be attracted only if we have sound policies. Our focus now must be on concrete policies and development,” he said.
Discussing the party’s future direction, Koirala said the Nepali Congress should move beyond ideological debates and prioritise development and prosperity.
He argued that with the Constitution already in place, the party’s primary goal should now be economic and social development.
