Kathmandu, Aug 15: The Nepal Oil Corporation’s decision to make citizenship certificates and national identity cards mandatory for purchasing cooking LPG gas has drawn widespread criticism.
Citizens have expressed dissatisfaction with the measure through social media and other platforms.
The corporation issued a notice on Friday stating that arrangements had been made to distribute LPG cylinders from different companies at five locations in Kathmandu Valley on Saturday. The notice instructed consumers to bring their citizenship certificate and national identity card to purchase gas.
The decision has faced criticism after the corporation made identification documents mandatory. Nepal Oil Corporation spokesperson Manoj Thakur said the measure was introduced to make gas distribution orderly and transparent and ensure that cylinders reach genuine consumers.
According to Thakur, some people have been found collecting multiple gas cylinders and stockpiling them, leaving consumers who urgently need gas without supplies.
The corporation said identification documents were made mandatory to address this problem, maintain records of genuine consumers and ensure that those in need can obtain gas more easily.
Thakur said consumers who do not have citizenship certificates or national identity cards can also purchase gas by presenting other documents that establish their identity, such as voter identity cards, student identity cards or other official documents.
He said keeping records of how much gas each individual receives would help prevent black marketing and unnecessary stockpiling.
Thakur said the measure was not intended to inconvenience citizens but to ensure that LPG reaches consumers who genuinely need it. The corporation said it has instructed its depots and distributors not to deprive anyone of gas and to give priority to genuine consumers facing difficulties.
