Kathmandu, Aug 15: Nepali Congress outgoing president and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the party was weakened by violating its rules and statute in the name of holding a special general convention.
Speaking at a national gathering in Kathmandu on Friday, shortly after returning home following five months of medical treatment, Deuba said it was wrong to claim that the Nepali Congress had achieved nothing in the past.
“To understand what the Nepali Congress has done, one must look at the situation before 1950,” he said. “The transformative movements of 1950, 1979, 1990 and 2006 were all led by the Nepali Congress. We can find the right path only by learning from history.” He also urged party members not to undermine the party’s past achievements.
Addressing the internal dispute within the party, Deuba said the special general convention had harmed the Congress.
“In the name of the special general convention, the party’s rules and statute were violated, weakening the party,” he said. “I am confident that we will get justice from the Supreme Court on this matter.”
Deuba said the country was going through a sensitive situation marked by political, economic and social crises.
“The situation in the country is very sensitive. People are frustrated, and we must turn that frustration into hope,” he said, pledging to continue working for the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
Calling for broader unity within the party, Deuba urged leaders and cadres to stand together.
“We need to seek unity that ensures justice for all colleagues and respects everyone’s sentiments,” he said. “I am ready to make any sacrifice for the rights and role of the people.”
Deuba also thanked the party leaders and cadres who gave him a warm welcome at the airport upon his return to Nepal.
