Nepali workers send over Rs 1.44 trillion home in eight months

Kathmandu, April 3: Nepali migrant workers have sent around rs 1,449.65 billion in remittances during the first eight months of fiscal year 2082/83 (mid-July 2025 to mid-March 2026), showing a sharp rise from the previous year.

Data from Nepal Rastra Bank indicates remittance inflow grew by 37.7 per cent, compared to just 9.5 per cent in the same period last year. February alone saw Rs 188.64 billion, up from Rs 151.19 billion in February 2025.

The report also showed net transfers, or secondary income, surged to Rs 1,591.66 billion from Rs 1,149.30 billion a year earlier.

Meanwhile, 273,536 Nepalis received new foreign employment permits, while 251,985 obtained re-permits. Last year, these figures were 317,068 and 217,403, respectively.

The numbers reflect continued reliance on remittances as a key driver of Nepal’s economy, even as the pattern of labour migration shifts slightly with fewer new permits but more renewals.
