Anutin new PM of Thailand

Kathmandu, September 6: Thailand’s parliament elected Anutin Charnvirakul as the new prime minister of Thailand on Friday.

Anutin, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, won 311 votes in a vote attended by 492 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives.

His rival, Pheu Thai Party candidate Chaikasem Nitisiri, received only 152 votes, while 27 lawmakers remained neutral.

Although Anutin had only 69 seats in his own party, the support of the Liberal People’s Party brought him to a majority.

Last week, a constitutional court ousted then-Prime Minister Patongtorn Shinawatra, paving the way for a new leadership.

Prime Minister Anutin has promised to form an interim government and hold new elections within four months. He previously served as deputy prime minister, interior minister and health minister.
