Maoist Center prepares to hold statute assembly

The ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) has decided to organise its statute convention from February 13-15.

A meeting of the party’s standing committee held at the party headquarters in Paris Danda on Saturday decided to hold the statute convention.

Obviously, the party called the statute convention to pave the way for party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to become party chairman infinitely.

Dahal has been the chairman of the party since its inception 34 years ago. Over the years, he has remained a dominant figure in the party by sidelining other powerful leaders like Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Mohan Viadhya and Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal. Even today, he has not groomed any leader to lead the party after his retirement.

The meeting also fixed the basis for the selection of the convention representative, as reported by the media.

It was also said that the meeting also discussed the issues of unification bids with like-minded political forces, and a unity coordination committee under the coordination of Chairman of CPN (Maoist Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been formed.

Meanwhile, the draft statute has been sent to lower committees for discussion. The statute was sent to the province committees, district committee and local level committee of the parties for discussion including the suggestions received in the party standing committee meeting on Saturday.

The lower committees will discuss the draft till February 4 and send it to the centre with their suggestions in writing.

Meanwhile, party vice general secretary Janardan Sharma submitted a proposal to the standing committee stating that some issues had been missed in the draft statute. He has proposed to change the name of the party, elect the leadership through a democratic process and empower the province and district committees. It seems Sharma’s proposal will be a challenge to Dahal as  Sharma has demanded a democratic process in selecting the leadership.
