SC alters President’s decision to give pardon to convicted murderers

Kathmandu, 2 November: The Supreme Court today (Thursday) gave a verdict rejecting the President’s decision to release Yog Raj Dhakal “Regal”, facing a murder charge. Dhalkal is an NC activist, and the government, under the influence of the NC, had recommended the President to free the person who committed a heinous murder.

A full bench of Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Sapana Pradhan Malla and Kumar Chudal issued the verdict to arrest him immediately in response to a writ petition by Bharati Sherpa, wife of Chetan Manandhar, who was murdered by Dhakal in 2015.

The bench has stated that releasing a murder-convicted person from jail was constitutionally and legally wrong.

The SC decision has raised moral questions about the government led by Pushpakamal Dahal and also the status of President Ramchandra Paudel.

The Nepalgunj Police arrested Dhakal immediately after the SC verdict.

The President and the government have fallen into controversy when some other criminals who got amnesty were again arrested by the police immediately after they committed other crimes including murder.
