Rift in the ruling Nepali Congress has been widening over the performance of the government and the working style of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Two weeks ago, leader Shekhar Koirala met party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and warned him to correct his working styles in the party.
This week, party general secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa demanded that the ministers representing the NC should quit the government. He argued that the ministers were unable to perform and it would impact the next elections. Youth leader Pardeep Paudel also expressed similar views. They opined that the Socialist Front should be allowed to run the government and NC should support it from the floor. Maoist Centre, CPN (Unified Socialist), JSP-N and Biplav’s communist party are on the Front.
In recent weeks, many NC leaders have abandoned the party membership being frustrated with the activities of the party leadership and the government. Chandra Singh Bhattarai was one of the senior leaders to quit the party.
When party president Deuba has a single goal to establish his wife Arzu Rana in the party, many of the leaders are not happy with that mission because of the tainted image of Arzu.
A senior NC leader recently told an interesting thing to this reporter, “When the hen crows, believe that the institution is on the verge of collapse. NC will face fate because of the smartness of Arzu.”
Obviously, Nepali society is still traditional and it cannot easily digest the domination of wife over husband, and Deuba has, in recent years, been just a puppet of Arzu in political affairs. It was reflected in the 2022 elections when the NC failed to receive its votes in PR category election only because Arzu was one of the candidates under the category.
However, as the rival faction led by Koirala and Thapa has not been united as both of them are trying to become party president in the upcoming general convention, they have been utterly unable to weaken Deuba and Arzu in the party.
