Earthquake jolts West Nepal

Multiple earthquakes shook Bajhang district on Tuesday, leaving 12 injured and one missing. The missing person is 40-year-old Gunamati Dhami who was carried away by a quake-induced landslide at Okhar, of Jayaprithvi Municipality–11.

The largest of the earthquakes measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. It hit Bajhang at 3.06 pm and had its epicentre at Chainpur. As of 8 pm Tuesday, police data showed that over 200 houses had collapsed in the district and over 2,000 more had become unsafe.

The shocks and aftershocks have forced hundreds of people out into the open, informed Uttam Bahadur Rokaya, chairman of Khaptadchhanna Rural Municipality. Many have pitched tents to spend the night under.

The 6.3 tremor was felt in all the districts of the Sudurpashchim Province. It was preceded by a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that also had its epicentre in Bajhang at Talkot at struck at 2.40 pm on Tuesday
