We have a popular Nepali proverb, “Machha, Machha, Bhyaguta” (fish, fish, no fish but a frog). The meaning is that while attempting to catch fish, one will catch a frog. The Tai Tai Phish also denotes a mission unsuccessful. The much talked about files related to smuggling and scandals such as Lalitaniwas government land grab scam, the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, one quintal gold smuggling scam and the nine kg gold scam is being closed down without investigating those top-ranking political leaders. Central Investigation Bureau has submitted the report on the Lalitaniwas government land grab scam just maintaining formality in interrogating former prime ministers Madhav Nepal and Baburam Bhattarai, who were the top-ranking political leaders deciding on the scam. Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal and DPM and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha put strong pressure on the CIB officials for giving a clean chit to the two former prime ministers despite the Supreme Court order for investigating those top-ranking leaders who decided on the Lalitaniwas land.
Those Nepal Police officials who were honestly investigating the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, have been transferred within four months. NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba was unhappy with the Police officials when they arrested his confidant Balkrishna Khand. Deuba had put pressure on the PM and Home Minister for transferring the Police officials and altering the file related to the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.
Maoist Center vice chairman Krishna Bahadur Mahara and his son Rahul are reported to be involved in the 9 kg gold smuggling scam. The names of the Mahara duo and phone details of the person involved in gold smuggling have been included in the Police investigation report but Mahara and his son were not interrogated due to the political protection.
PM Dahal had claimed that he will take zero tolerance on the corruption cases and open new corruption files. DPM Shrestha also said that same but they tried to close the files by protecting those top-ranking political leaders.
Such an act of the government has established the assumption that those top-ranking political leaders are beyond the law and constitution of the country. This attitude of the government has also established a theory, “You are thieve, I am thieve, let’s keep quiet and protect each other!”. Although, for the time being, those top-ranking leaders have escaped from the investigation, commoners are not ready to believe that they are clean but directly involved in smuggling, corruption and other scandals. Those leaders have spoiled the entire political spectrum making it the venue for smuggling, corruption and irregularities. Not odd, these leaders have proved that the present federalism, secularism and republicanism are for the thieves, of the thieves and by the thieves.
