Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Balendra Shah has been making news headlines not only in Nepal but also in India because of his pro-nationalist and pro-people activities.
Shah, who has been elected to the top executive post of the capital city as an independent candidate, dared to challenge the Indian hegemony not only by placing the map of greater Nepal in his office but also threatening to impose a ban on the screening of Hindi movies in Kathmandu immediately after the release of Aadipurush, an Indian movie that has a dialogue that Sita (Janaki) was the daughter of India.
Shah in a Facebook post said that the KMC would impose a ban on screening Hindi movies if the controversial dialogue was not deleted from the film. Although the censor board allowed the screening of the movie in Nepal by removing the controversial dialogue, Shah demanded that the dialogue should be removed even in India and elsewhere. Because of Shah’s demand, the distributor decided to stop the screening of the movie in Kathmandu. However, other mayors also followed suit banning the screening of the movie in Pokhara, Baglung and Dharan.
Mayor Shah also prevented the school employees from resorting to the strike stating that anyone forcing the closure of school could face action. He clearly intended to keep the education sector free from politics. He also made schools abide by the law by giving scholarships to 10 per cent of students.
After education, the Mayor has announced making the city self-reliant on vegetables so that the denizens do not have to consume imported vegetables.
