NC’s new generation in dilemma after Shekhar becomes close to Deuba

By Our Reporter

All is not well with the Nepali Congress, the oldest party in Nepal. It has not been functioning as per its statute ever since Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as its president in 2016. The party has been faring badly in elections and has failed to perform when in power.

Considering these flaws of the leadership, the youth leaders in the party have been raising voices for transformation and correction in the party. However, as Deuba enjoys a majority both in the parliamentary party and central committee, the youth have been helpless. Party general secretary duo Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, both representing the young generation, have been advocating for transformation in the party, and until a few months ago, Thapa was taking Dr. Shekhar Koirala as their leader.

However, of late, when the intimacy between Deuba and Koirala has increased, they have become suspicious of their plans for party transformation.

The two general secretaries want to retain youths in the party after many started joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party with the hope of getting a chance in the new party. It is suspected that Deuba and Koirala have reached a gentleman agreement to make Koirala the next party president, and the two have developed good relations in recent weeks. They often appeared together in any function. This new development has disappointed the youth leaders as well as the well-wishers of the grand old party.
