The pathetic state of Loktantra

BABBLES

By Babbler

11 Baisakh (24 April) was observed as Loktantra Day in the country. In 2006 April, a gentleman’s agreement was reached between the then King Gyanendra and the leaders of the political parties in the “second people’s movement”. Not a secret, the entire “people’s movement” was solely sponsored and commanded by the South Block and later influenced by the Western force.

The “people’s movement” was coordinated by the South Block through a 12-point Delhi agreement.

From India, Karan Singh, accompanied by the then foreign secretary Shyamsharan, arrived in Kathmandu as a special envoy of the then Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh. Karan Singh was the witness to the said gentleman’s agreement. That agreement was based on the two-pillar political system – constitutional monarchy and multiparty democracy. The then King handed over the executive power that he was exercising to the then-leader of the movement, Girija Prasad Koirala.

The game didn’t end even after the gentleman’s agreement as cunning and greedy Koirala wished to become the president of the Republic of Nepal. Maoist leader Pushpakamal Dahal distributed such a dream and Koirala and Madhab Kumar Nepal betrayed the King. Shyamsharan, the commander of the “second people’s movement” also played a role in disposing of the institution of monarchy.

In this way, the “Loktantra” was introduced through conspiracy and betrayal and thus it became nonfunctional. Already, it has been 17 years but it has become unsuccessful. The leaders indulged in rampant corruption, have become so unpopular that those “revolutionary” political parties are facing a crisis of existence. Coincidentally, a newly born Rastriya Swatantra Party has strongly challenged those “revolutionary” parties — Nepali Congress, UML and Maoist Center. At a time when the leaders were extending congratulatory messages on the occasion of Loktantra Day, their candidates were facing defeat in the by-elections. Maybe, the heydays of those “revolutionary” leaders have been over.

People for a change

The result of by-elections has shown that people are frustrated with those existing political parties and they are seeking alternatives to the present political parties. When they saw new faces in the Rastriya Swatantra Party, the voters chose its candidates. Out of the three electoral constituencies, RSP was able to secure two constituencies in the by-elections.

RSP is not out of controversy and we are not sure that the party is a patriotic force and serves the nation honestly. Surely, it becomes clear in the days to come. Be that as it may, when the voters didn’t get an alternate choice, they voted for RSP candidates.

In all three electoral constituencies, the ruling alliance had given common candidates. In Tanahun, the known fort of the Nepali Congress, the common candidate representing the Nepali Congress stood second. Accordingly, in Chitwan, the common candidate from the Nepali Congress stood second. Fortunately, in the Bara constituency, the common candidate from the Janata Samajwadi Party ensured victory. Sitting Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had reached all three constituencies for an election campaign. Despite all these efforts, they were unable to secure victory for their candidates. Nepali Congress and Maoist Center have become very weak and they cannot face any election without an electoral alliance. UML although contested the election without developing an electoral alliance, was left far behind in the race. The result of the by-election has given the gesture that those established and influential political parties have already lost the trust of the voters.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

When Makune, Jhale and Prachanda wanted to downsize Oli, they themselves are on the verge of collapse. Nepali Congress is on the verge of collapse as it wished to carry the Maoist Center. Build the nation and strengthen the people. If you are unable to sacrifice bad practices, you will be finished.

Ramesh Kandel

Loktantra itself is a self-regulating system. If a party leadership tries to move forward by making hostage the self-regulating mechanism, the downfall of the party is obvious.

Muma Ram Khanal

If the by-election is considered a mini-referendum, it is clear that the people do not trust the current ruling coalition, therefore, the coalition must be broken.

Devendra Chudal

Within a few years of the introduction of the Federal Democratic Republic, the people have become so desperate and frustrated with this system and leadership that the people’s anger is taking a chaotic path.

Anar Singh Karki

Nepali Congress, the oldest party, and the Maoist Center which has come under the legacy of 10 years of violence, have lost their ability to face the elections alone. Even though the CPN-UML seems to be organized force, the people’s attraction is not there.

Arjun Gyawali

The government is raising a loan worth 20 billion rupees to pay salaries to the employees. Even though, they do not realize that federalism is becoming a tool for looting the country.

Lilanath Gautam

If this situation continues, people will not only vote for UML and Nepali Congress, but they will not even give their daughters.

Kagdai

Now the Nepali Congress has two options left. ‘To be corrected or be finished”. The continuation of this style is enough for being finished.

Mukesh Kafle, PhD

The blood and sweat of the people will be exhausted just for feeding and keeping healthy the new kings of the republic!

When President Paudel was taken to Delhi for treatment, 62 lakh rupees were paid just for the airfare. How much are the other expenses?

Dr Gothe

Now, if a person like the President falls ill, if he does not spend even two to four crore rupees, it will be a disgrace to the nation.

Manjil Shrestha

Why this motorcycle (Yatri) should not come to the Nepali market? Whether this is the government or foreign brokers? Is there no space for the local products?

Harka Sampang A Revolution

If an investigation is carried out, all the leaders will go to jail turn by turn.
