Puppet governments

EDITORIAL

At a time when it is being speculated that the present ruling alliance was developed under the Indo-West strategy, Maoist Center’s senior and responsible leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who is currently the vice-chairman and was the speaker in the past, has claimed that the government in the country are not being run by Nepali people but by someone from somewhere else.

Mahara, a former foreign minister, addressing the third general meeting of Press Center East Nawalparasi on Saturday, named Prachanda, Oli and Deuba the only puppets of the foreign powers.

Mahara, although, didn’t openly discuss the invisible power that runs the state affairs of Nepal, said, “Although we have a government under the leadership of our (party) president, this is our problem, even if he is the prime minister, this is what it happens,”

Dramatically Nepal’s governments fail and constitute. Just three months ago, unexpectedly, the government was formed through an alliance with UML. Foreign powers, particularly Delhi, didn’t like that alliance. Understandably, although, UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli tried his best to please Delhi either by removing the new political map of Nepal from the textbooks for the school-level students, also performing a red-carpet welcome to RAW chief Samant Goel holding a mid-night meeting at Baluatar, the official residence of the prime minister of Nepal, even by violating the diplomatic norms, still, Delhi has felt a humiliation since Oli presented the proposal form amending the constitution of Nepal by introducing a new political map incorporating Kalapani-Lipulekh-Limpiyuadhara. Moreover, when then President Bidya Devi Bhandari denied sealing the new citizenship amendment bill passed by both Houses of Parliament through a fast track, Delhi became furious with Oli. The Indians failed the previous seven-party alliance and constituted the present 10-party alliance government.

Now, Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal is instrumental in reviving the citizenship amendment bill again and sealing it from Delhi-friendly President. Furthermore, we may see the smooth implementation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and State Partnership Programme (SPP) in the days to come.

In the process of winning the confidence of his Indian bosses, PM Dahal has desired for visiting Delhi in the first week of Baisakh, Nepali new year 2080 (third week of April). He is keenly waiting for an invitation from the Indian government. He has also prepared the list of items to be gifted to India, including the two key hydropower projects which were already included in the priority projects to be constructed under China initiated Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). According to reports, PM Dahal is preparing a long-term deal for exporting electricity to India at a very nominal price creating a huge loss to the nation. Maybe, while doing so, PM Dahal may prolong his premiership for some months or so but he is happy with such personal gains by sacrificing the greater national interests.

The governments become foreigners’ puppets, still, we the people have remained a helpless and silent spectators of all these happenings.
