Global warming serious threat to the mankind

By Sushma Shrestha

We are viewing the melting of the Himalayas, unnatural floods, landslides, unnatural and non-seasonal rains, and incline in temperature, among others. Not odd, Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate change.

Global initiatives:

The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) kicked off on Sunday in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh, according to RSS. The Conference attended by heads of state and governments, 30,000 government officials, civil society members, activists, researchers, media persons and other stakeholders from 197 member states across the world concluded on 8 November.

A delegation led by Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi, represented Nepal at the Conference. The Conference focused on a broader range of issues including enhancing implementation and raising ambitious issues related to climate change.

The issues of greenhouse gas emission reduction, that of bringing together the world’s all countries to maintain earth’s temperature increment at 1.5 degree Celsius, the preparations of an action plan to implement the Glasgow Climate Pact, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and ambitious goals of emissions reduction, the implementation of the Finance for Climate Adaptation from COP26 and the agreement on the global goals on climate adaptation were discussed during the Conference.

Mainly, developed and developing nations, in a business competition, have contributed a lot to the cause of global warming. Obviously, these nations have a greater role in saving the planet making it suitable for mankind.

Nepal, although a less developed nation and has almost no contribution to global warming, is also suffering a lot from global warming and climate change. Thus, Nepal should play an influential role to save our mountains and the adverse effects on mankind and nature from global warming.

Nepal’s role:

Nepal should laud compensation from the developed countries contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the country should initiate forestation campaigns to a larger extent. All the local bodies should be mobilized for preserving the rain water, preserving water in urban areas, preserving groundwater on the Chure Hill belt and other initiatives are necessary.

Reducing emissions through the use of hydropower should be Nepal’s prime concern. Use of e-vehicles, operation of factories by hydropower generated electricity, and special forestation plan in urban areas should be developed. Especially in urban areas, if there is a scarcity of developing greenery, house owners should be encouraged for planting small trees on the rooftops of their houses. For making effective this campaign, the local bodies have to be mobilized by the government.
