House reluctant to discuss impeachment issue against chief justice Rana

By Our Reporter

It has been a month since the budget session of the federal parliament was summoned. The discussions on the budget concluded and it is likely that the House passes the budget by Sunday.

However, in a month, the House did nothing to forward the impeachment motion registered against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.

In a democracy, the House has a right to impeach the chiefs of constitutional bodies like the Supreme Court. But it should conclude the process and decide the issue from the sovereign House. But the ruling parties, which had registered the impeachment motion against CJ Rana look reluctant to take the motion for parliamentary process.

It seems the parties in power have an ill intention to not let Rana to return to the SC. If the parliament fails to endorse the impeachment with two thirds majority, Rana will return to office. Endorsing the motion without support of the UML is impossible and UML has been against the impeachment. As such, the motion seemed to have registered only to suspend CJ Rana.

The case of CJ Rana clearly shows that impeachment has become a weapon for the party leaders to take revenge against the constitutional body chiefs, who could pose a threat to their corrupt activities.
