Important Lessons

There are several important lessons that can be drawn from the recent landmark agreement reached between Nepal and India on the integrated development of the Mahakllaki River during the just concluded official visit here of India’s External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Among them is that Nepal must learn to deal with the outside world with one voice specially where basic questions of national interest are involved as they clearly are in the matter of concluding treaties on the exploitation of Nepal’s water and/or land resources.

Indeed, the fact that a consensus among the major political parties — that is to say between the Nepali Congress, the RPP and the UML — had been reached prior to the Mukherjee’s visit on the basic approach to Tanakpur and other issued/projects related to the Mahakali River clearly contributed to the initialling of the Mahakali River Integrated Development Treaty by the two respective Foreign Minister the others day.
