Former ambassador and chairman of the China Study Center, Nepal Sundarnath Bhattarai believes that the visit of the Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi demonstrates China’s high importance to its relations with Nepal.
“The is taking place in the aftermath of the endorsement of the MCC Compact by Nepal’s Parliament in a somewhat precipitate manner despite opposition of some leading stalwarts of the political parties and adverse general public opinion, while Chinese media, at the same time, were making notes of their apparent displeasure”, said Bhattarai.
“It is believed that the visit will undoubtedly provide a significant opportunity to both sides for proper understanding of each other’s views and pave ways for further strengthening of close and intimate relationship existing between Nepal and China”, said Bhattarai.
“The most important significance of Minister Wang’s visit is the demonstration of high importance that China attaches to its relations with Nepal and its assurance of constant mutual cooperation in the midst of ensuing regional and global unstable political situation”.
“Nepal should impress upon Chinese delegation assuring of its adherence to its policy of peaceful coexistence and One-China policy which debars any activities from its soil against the interest of China, and Nepal’s stand and belief that, despite any external programme of assistance that Nepal is obliged to undertake temporarily, would not adversely affect our ongoing programmes of cooperation”, the chairman of the China Study Center said.
“Nepal, while expressing its profound appreciation of China’s generous and valuable assistance and support to its development, may convey Nepal’s firm wish for continued collaboration with China on matters of mutual interest and its ardent desire to benefit from China’s progress and prosperity”, he remarked.
“Nepal should focus on and draw the attention of the Chinese delegation for the urgent need for review and speedy implementation of bilateral programmes of cooperation pending for a long time due to the Covid 19 pandemic and other reasons”.
“First and foremost, we must realise the importance of China as our ‘friend in need’, as exemplified by its past actions, and the benefits that Nepal could be endowed with along its rise as a global world power, in the offing”, Bhattarai observed.
