Local private sector journals are facing heavy losses and several newspapers are to cease publication in the near future.
Suruchi, a vernacular weekly has already announced that it will cease publication immediately. Editor Shiva Adhikari explained that main reason behind that decision was the weekly’s financial problem.
Media sources report that Biswamitra fortnightly Rastrapukar and Punarjagaran weeklies are thinking of following in Suruchi’s footsteps. Publication of the pro-UML Surya dally has also been suspended. Samakaleen, another vernacular weekly, in a recent article, has observed that Nepali journalism is going through a very difficult period due to severe financial constraints.
