Allowing the leaders to deceive us?

On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan

In present-day Nepal, politics has become a dirty game. In other words, dirty people have dominated politics. Fraud, thieves, blackmailers, brokers, and businessmen’s agents have become our leaders and they are deceiving us continuously.

India is contentiously encroaching upon Nepali territory. They are constructing roads in Lipulek, Nepal. They have changed the origin of the Mahakali River with another name to permanently capture the Kalapano-Limpiyuadhara-Lipulek territory, which, according to the historical evidence, is the Nepali territory. The Indians have given the indications that they don’t want to settle down the border dispute with Nepal, instead, plan to capture the Nepali territory permanently. In 21 districts and 54 places, the Indians have encroached our territory. More than 60,000 hectares of Nepali territory have been encroached by the Indian side. In the Kalapani-Limpiyadhura-Lipulek area only, India has encroached 37,000 hectares of land.

Some leaders and the government after huge pressure from the people have issued statements just for formality. One Nepali youth Jaisingh Dhami was killed by the Indian border security force by cutting down the tuin rope when he was crossing the river. The Indian side is continuously demonstrating “dadagiri” on Nepal but the political leaders in the government, are unable to protest strongly against India. Neither the Foreign Ministry, nor the prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, nor Madhav Nepal, nor Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda has made a strong reaction against the Indian hegemony. What can we expect from those leaders who cannot speak against foreigners’ injustice? Can we expect that they will be able to safeguard Nepal’s sovereignty and independence if the Indians will attempt to annex Nepal forcefully?

King Birendra had tried to strengthen the Royal Nepal Army empowered with a minimum number of five hundred thousand personnel. King Birendra had also tried to establish small arms factories in the country and supply small arms to other South Asian nations. The King had tried to establish the military force having the strength of fighting at least for one week so that the country could get the chance to draw the attention of the international community. King Birendra had seen a threat of annexation of Nepal, which the present-day leaders have undermined. King Biendra’s proposal for declaring Nepal as the zone of peace was guided by the idea of safeguarding Nepal’s sovereignty. Sikkim, a sovereign kingdom was annexed by India through a conspiracy. India had also planned to split Nepal’s Tarai districts.

The present Indian and western countries’ strategy is to keep Nepal permanently a poor country so that Nepal should not be able to strengthen her security position. The 12-point Delhi agreement was designed by India and the West to keep the country politically unstable by pushing the country towards a civil war. Therefore, a political system economically unbearable was imposed. Those who worked for the foreigners’ interests have been empowered as leaders. The prime duty of those leaders serving their bosses is to cheat and loot the Nepali people and the country. The recent incident of the Batas group’s manipulation of the government coffer is an example of planned loot by the political leaders. Business group Batas is not alone in this scam. How the then minister Yogesh Bhattarai had taken an interest in rewarding Anandaraj Batas, has been disclosed by the then secretary at the ministry who was transferred to another ministry when he had rejected the proposal. The Lalitaniwas investigation report is another example that those political leaders and high-ranking government officials, involved in the scam have become clean and only those lower-level officials are facing the charge. Corruption in Nepal starts through the ill intention of the political leaders and high-ranking government officials. The government has tried to give clean chit to Madhav Nepal, Baburam Bhattarai, Bijaya Gachhadar, and other leaders who were involved in occupying the valuable government property by producing fake documents. There are countless examples of the daylight loot of the political leaders. The government mechanism for curbing corruption is very weak and ineffective as such organs are under the grip of the political parties in the government and in opposition. Those who are known to be the men of those corrupt leaders are being assigned to such agencies, including the court.

Without control over rampant corruption and in absence of the dedication and commitment of the political leaders building Nepal is impossible. Neither our economy will flourish nor the nation can be built. Without economic prosperity, we cannot strengthen our security organ.

To conclude, if we want the nation to be saved, we must punish those traitors under the cover of the political leaders, we must through away the present political system, we must reinstate the institution of monarchy as the monitor as the kings are found patriotic than the political leaders. And finally, we must establish very cordial relations with our northern neighbour. As Lipulek is the trijunction border point of three countries, Nepal must request China for a mediation.
