Amid fear of COVID-19, the Dashain festival begins today

By Our Reporter

Dashain, the biggest festival of Nepali people is beginning today after the people across the country sow seeds to grow Jamara in Dashain Ghars.

However, as fear of COVID-19 infection is still there with over 1,000 daily cases, people may not be able to mark the 15-day festival in a fanfare manner as in the past. Moreover, many people, who have lost jobs and sources of income because of the lockdown and restriction imposed to control and prevent coronavirus, are not in a position to mark the festivals as they used to in the past. As nearly two-thirds of the 11,000 plus fatalities reported in the country perished this year, the bereaved families will not be marking the festivals. Thus, the festival will not bring smiles to many this year.

Again the people who are staying away from their homes may not be able to travel to their home villages because of the fear of transmission of the COVID-19.

Although crowds have increased in marketplaces in recent days, the businessmen still complain that the business is not growing. And it is not unnatural considering the impact of COVID-19 on the income of the people.

The government and the transport entrepreneurs have already agreed to open the pre-booking of tickets for long-route buses, but the people are found hesitating to buy the tickets.

Anyway, Dashain has approached and the people will celebrate this. However, while celebrating the festival, everyone should abide by the health protocols to avoid COVID-19 infections.
