President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appointed Lieutenant General and Chief of General Staff (CGS) Prabhu Ram Sharma as the new Chief of Army Staff (CoAS).
President Bhandari appointed Sharma, who had been working as the Acting Chief of Army Staff since the previous chief Purna Chandra Thapa went on leave on August 9, following Article 267 (5) of the Constitution of Nepal on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Office, Sharma’s appointment will come into effect on September 9.
CoAS Sharma, a four-star general, will be the 44th Army Chief to lead the oldest military organisation in the country.
Sharma, who had successfully handled the responsibility of Director General of War Affairs of the Army Headquarters, is known as an ‘amicable’ officer in the force.
