What could be PM Oli’s next strategy

Kathmandu, 13 May: Prime Minister and chairman of the ruling party UML K.P. Sharma Oli had called a standing committee meeting in the process of developing a new strategy.

The opposition parties are trying to manage 136 votes to give an alternative government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba. The deadline was given by President Bidya Devi Bhandari to claim for an alliance government of two or more than two parties by this evening. To manage the necessary number, the opposition parties need sole votes from the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSPN), however, the party is divided into two factions. One faction led by Mahantha Thakur and Rajendra Mahato is against the alliance government.

The other option left for the opposition parties is the resignation of around 20 MPs belonging to the Madhav Nepal faction in UML. If 20 MPs will tender resignation, only 126 votes are needed to secure a majority. Therefore, the opposition parties have requested Madhav Nepal to tender resignation en masse by this afternoon.

After knowing such a plan of the opposition groups, Oli has called the meeting of the standing committee to develop a new strategy.

Meanwhile, reports state that Oli had called Madhav Nepal this morning and later he had sent his special envoy Bishnu Poudel to hold talks with Nepal. It is said that there is a high possibility of talks between Oli and Nepal today.

Oli closed UML leader Subhas Nemang informed that Oli is trying his best to stop the resignation of the Madhav Nepal faction en masse.

“We are at a crucial point in the history of the party. We are expecting some vital decision from the leadership to save the party from a split,” Nembang said.

If the opposition parties will fail to give an alternative government, Oli will get an opportunity to continue the government at the capacity of the leader of the largest party UML. However, he will have to seek a vote of confidence within a month. If he fails to secure a vote of confidence from the House, he can dissolve the House seeking a fresh mandate within six months. In such a case, Oli will get an opportunity to lead an election government.
