The general strike called by the Pachanda-Nepal faction on Thursday last week though remained largely peaceful drew severe criticism from almost all sectors. The business community, general people as well as the Nepali Congress condemned it stating that it added pains to the people and the businesses already affected by COVID-19 and the 10-month lockdown.
The faction had called the strike against the appointments in the constitutional bodies, which it said were unconstitutional. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli-led Constitutional Council had filled up the vacant posts in the constitutional bodies by introducing an ordinance which contradicted the Constitution.
The appointments were made when three of the five sitting members of the Constitutional Council had boycotted it opposing the Ordinance. Moreover, it was widely portrayed that the appointments in the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority were made to file corruption cases against Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal, the faction promptly reacted it by calling the general strike.
Both Dahal and Nepal also came to the street to make the bandh a success, but when Dahal came to the road on a car and Nepal on a scooter, both of the drew flak stating that they called the strike sending all vehicles off the road but the leaders who called the strike came to the street on vehicles.
When the general people took to the social sites to criticise the bandh, Nepali Congress spokesperson in a statement urged all political forces not to resort to the bandh.
Many people, including patients visiting hospitals, were stranded by the bandh called suddenly. The faction had decided to call the bandh just 16 hours before it was imposed. A taxi was burnt, while the Oli faction’s Cyber Army tried to defame the bandh by uploading old pictures of India and Nepal in which vegetables were shown thrown in the streets.
