Indian hegemony continues

By Our Reporter

India has again exhibited its hegemonic attitude by unilaterally constructing an embankment in the Mahakali river despite repeated requests from the Nepal government to halt the construction works.

Obstructing the natural flow of the Mahakali River in Galphyee of Municipality-5, Darchula, India has continued construction works of an embankment unilaterally violating all international treaties and agreements, according to media reports.

Indians, violating the international border treaty and agreements, are constructing embankment by diverting the natural flow of the Mahakali River towards the Nepal side.

The Indian side had to coordinate the Nepal side while conducting any construction works in the border area.

The local administration in Darchula has already informed the concerned sector about the construction of the embankment by the Indians in Nepali territory.

The Indian side had to coordinate with the Nepal side while constructing a physical structure in the border river. Even after the Nepal side’s request to stop construction works, the Indian side didn’t respond to it.

Following the construction works in the border river, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry is learnt to have written two letters to the Indian Foreign Ministry. The Indian side has neither responded to the letters nor stopped the construction works.

Seven years ago, the flood in Mahakali River had swept away 156 houses in Darchula district headquarters. To save the settlement there, the Nepal side had tried to construct an embankment to return the river towards its previous course. However, the Indian side protested against the construction. Again, Nepal constructed the embankment 100 mitres inside the Nepal side as it was urgent to save the settlement.

Presently, the Indian side is constructing embankment across the river by diverting the natural flow of the river which is the Nepali territory.

Meanwhile, the Indian border security force had attempted to erect border pillars unilaterally in Nepal-India border at Hile in Ilam, eastern Nepal, however, locals have foiled the Indian attempt.

When locals in Suryodaya Municipality were informed about the erection of border pillars one-sidedly at Hile, Nepal-India borders by encroaching Nepali territory on 3 January, they protested the Indian act. Finally, the Indian security force had to return from the spot by stopping erection of the border pillars.

Locals and Nepal’s Armed Police Force personnel had reached the spot and forced the Indian security force to stop their act.
