Thapa becomes 28th police chief

The government has appointed Additional Inspector General of Nepal Police (AIG) Shailesh Thapa Chhetri to the post of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

A meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday appointed Thapa as the 28th chief of Nepal police.

Thapa Chhetri will take the charge of the command formally from Thursday. Sitting IGP Thakur Prasad Gyawali got retirement on Wednesday.

IGP Thapa Chhetri will remain in the top post of the organisation till May 2, 2022.

Born in Katunje of Bhaktapur district on December 8, 1968, Thapa had joined the organisation on May 1, 1992 as police inspector.

Thapa’s batch mate AIG Hari Pal was also in the race of IGP.

Thapa was promoted as AIG on February 27, 2020. IGP Thapa, during his career, had also participated in the UN peace mission in East Timor, Darfur (Sudan) and Bosnia Herzegovina.

Along with sitting IGP Gyawali, AIGs duo Tarani Dutta Lamsal and DIG Surya Upadhyaya got retirement on Wednesday.
