Panel receives several complaints against four SC nominees

Kathmandu, Nov 6: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has received 13 complaints against four nominees for Supreme Court justices as it began the parliamentary hearing process on Thursday.

The committee opened and reviewed the complaint files concerning the nominations of Ratna Bahadur Bagchand, Chandra Bahadur Saru, Janak Pandey and Gokarna Dangi, who were recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court by the Judicial Council.

Committee chairperson Bodh Narayan Shrestha informed members that 13 complaints had been registered against the four nominees. The complaints were distributed among committee members for examination ahead of discussions with those who filed them.

The committee has scheduled a meeting for 9:30 am on Friday to hear the complainants and discuss the issues raised in their submissions.

The complaints will form part of the parliamentary scrutiny of the nominees before the committee decides whether to endorse their appointments.

Under the constitutional process, Supreme Court justice nominees must undergo a parliamentary hearing before their appointments can be finalised. The hearing provides an opportunity for lawmakers to examine the candidates’ professional backgrounds, qualifications and suitability for judicial office, while also considering objections raised by members of the public.

The Judicial Council had earlier recommended the four names for appointment to the country’s highest court. Their appointments will proceed after the completion of the parliamentary hearing process and the committee’s decision.

The committee has yet to disclose the specific allegations or concerns raised in the 13 complaints. People’s News Monitoring Service
