Beijing, November 4: Around 500 media personnel, including leaders from media organisations, think tanks, government agencies, the United Nations, and other international organisations, from nearly 330 institutions across 112 countries and regions have gathered in Beijing to attend the 7th World Media Summit from November 5 to 9.
The 7th summit is being organized jointly by Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality under the theme “Media in the Intelligent Age: from Consensus to Action”.
The World Media Summit (WMS) Secretariat in Beijing stated: The Summit is set to reach new highs in the breadth of international representation, the number of participating institutions and the seniority of delegates. The Summit has provided a platform for sharing experiences of media transformation, discussing governance issues and exploring opportunities for collaboration, helping media worldwide translate shared concerns into an agenda for cooperation and consensus into practical action.
The world today faces a fluid and complex international landscape, with changes unseen in a century accelerating. Our world, our times and history are changing in ways like never before. Addressing the development deficit, overcoming security dilemmas, strengthening exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, and improving global governance are shared challenges for humanity.
Meeting global challenges and building a better future require not only economic and technological strength, but also the power of culture and civilization. News media have an important mission to connect the world, foster understanding and build consensus. They should play an active role in promoting global development and prosperity, safeguarding international peace and security, advancing human civilization and the reform of global governance, thereby contributing to building a community with a shared future for humanity.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly changing patterns of economic and social development and transforming journalism and communication. From news gathering and content production to distribution and operational management, intelligent technologies are reshaping the entire media workflow. They offer unprecedented opportunities to improve efficiency, diversify content formats and expand reach, while raising new challenges, including the spread of disinformation, growing algorithmic bias and a widening AI divide. Opportunities and challenges are growing in tandem for media worldwide in the age of AI.
Faced with these opportunities and challenges, media must embrace changes while upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground. As major users of intelligent technologies and guardians of an orderly information environment, we have a responsibility to uphold truthfulness in journalism, promote inclusive access to technology, advance exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, and participate in global governance. Strengthening cooperation on sharing technological advances and building capacity, advocating equal access for Global South countries, and promoting safe, fair and inclusive AI development are key priorities for deeper international media cooperation.
Deeper international media cooperation requires open and inclusive platforms for exchanges and effective, lasting mechanisms for collaboration. The World Media Summit was jointly launched in 2009 by Xinhua and a collection of globally acclaimed media organizations. Over the past 17 years, it has convened six summits in China, Russia and Qatar, held four Presidium meetings, and organized the World Media Summit Global Awards for Excellence, training programs for media professionals and public welfare reporting events. It has grown into one of the world’s largest, most expansive and most influential high-level platforms for media exchanges and cooperation. Dubbed the “Media Olympics,” it has played a positive role in fostering mutual understanding, building consensus and strengthening cooperation among media organizations worldwide.
