Heavy rain in three provinces; weather to improve from Sunday

Kathmandu, Oct 31: The remnants of Cyclone Arnab, which developed over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with the partial influence of westerly winds, are affecting weather across Nepal, bringing widespread cloud cover and rain, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said.

Moderate rain is currently occurring at many places in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while some areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim are experiencing light rain. Cloudy conditions are expected across the country this afternoon.

Most parts of Koshi, Madhes and Bagmati provinces, some areas of Gandaki, and a few mountainous and hilly areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim are likely to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and snowfall.

A few places in the Terai districts of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim may receive light rain. At the same time, one or two locations in Koshi, Madhes and Bagmati could experience heavy rainfall and snowfall, the department said.

Cloudy conditions are expected nationwide tonight, with moderate rain and snowfall likely in some mountainous areas. Light rain is also possible at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi and Gandaki provinces.

The department has advised farmers to avoid harvesting paddy and carrying out other agricultural activities today and tomorrow due to the likelihood of rain.

It has also warned of heavy snowfall, snowstorms, and avalanches in high-altitude and mountainous areas, urging people to remain alert. Tourists have been advised against travelling to high-altitude areas, while those already there have been asked to stay in safe locations until weather conditions improve.

The department has warned that falling temperatures, landslides along vulnerable slopes and roads, and disruptions to road and air transport could affect daily life. It has urged the public and concerned agencies to take precautions and make necessary preparations.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Sunday afternoon as the influence of Cyclone Arnab weakens.
