35 Years Ago: UML Meet Seeks Unity

The Central Committee meeting of the United Marxist Leninists in Kathmandu has raised considerable speculation in the absence of some of its major backers amidst controversies regarding splits in higher ranks.

The UML’s party chief is, most notably, in the United Stated attending the UN General Assembly at this time. People like Chandra Prakash Mainali and Bharat Mohan Adhikari are in Pyong Yang. These absentees become a significant indicator of the timing of the meeting which is said to precede preparation for major movement against the Congress government after the Tihar festivals.

Ideological tussles within the UML have also been surfacing of late and the Central Committee meeting is hardly likely to have served the issue.
