NC General Convention: 809 candidates enter election race

Kathmandu, Oct 7: The Nepali Congress Central Election Committee has published the first list of candidates for the party’s 15th General Convention, with 809 candidates filing nominations for various positions.

Three candidates, Gagan Kumar Thapa, Kishor Singh Rathour and Shyam Krishna Khadgi, are contesting for party president. Thapa was elected president through the Special General Convention, while Rathour was elected joint general secretary at the 14th General Convention. Khadgi is a former president of the party’s Kathmandu Constituency 5 committee.

Bishwo Prakash Sharma, who became vice president through the Special General Convention, has been elected unopposed as senior vice president. Pushpa Bhusal has also been elected unopposed as women’s vice president. Both were the sole candidates for their respective positions.

Nine candidates have filed nominations for two open vice president positions, while five are contesting one inclusive vice president position.

Eight candidates are competing for two open general secretary positions, while three have filed nominations for one women’s general secretary position.

Pratima Gautam and Nanumaya Bastola are contesting the single women’s joint general secretary position. Ten candidates have entered the race for two open joint general secretary posts.

For joint general secretary under inclusive categories, five candidates are competing under the Indigenous Nationalities category, four under Dalit, eight under Madhesi and three under Khas Arya. Three candidates each are contesting under the Tharu and Muslim categories, seven under backward regions and four under the minority and disability category.

The Central Working Committee races have also drawn large numbers of candidates.

Ninety-two candidates are competing for 45 open central member positions, while 42 candidates are contesting 15 open women’s seats.

Under Indigenous Nationalities, 40 candidates are competing for 13 open seats and 36 for eight women’s seats. The Dalit category has 31 candidates for eight open seats and 18 for five women’s seats, while five candidates are contesting one Dalit Madhesi seat.

The Madhesi category has 28 candidates for eight open seats and 14 for five women’s seats. Under Khas Arya, 38 candidates are competing for 10 seats and 30 women for eight seats.

Ten candidates are contesting four Tharu seats and seven are competing for two Tharu women’s seats. Sixteen candidates have filed for three Muslim open seats and seven for two Muslim women’s seats.

Five candidates are competing for one central member position representing backward regions and three for the corresponding women’s seat. Twelve candidates are contesting one minority seat and nine are competing for one disability seat.

From Koshi Province, 14 candidates are competing for three central member positions, while 21 candidates have filed for two seats reserved for those under 35.

From Madhesh Province, 17 candidates have filed nominations for central membership, while 13 are competing for two under 35 seats.
