Kathmandu, Oct 5: Internet service providers have stopped offering cheap, low-speed internet packages from today, October 5 (Asoj 19).
The Internet Service Providers’ Association of Nepal (ISPAN) announced the decision in a notice, saying its members would discontinue affordable packages offering lower internet speeds.
ISPAN said Nepal has made significant progress in internet access and usage over the past 12 years. It claimed that Nepal remains among the most affordable countries in South Asia in terms of fixed broadband access and penetration.
However, the association said rising costs in recent years have made it increasingly difficult for internet service providers to continue offering low priced packages.
According to ISPAN, rising fuel prices amid tensions in the Middle East, higher fibre costs, inflation and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence have pushed up the prices of electronic equipment and chipsets.
The increase in operating costs has made it difficult for internet service providers to sustain their existing services at current prices, the association said.
As a result, ISPs will no longer offer the affordable, low speed internet packages that had been available to customers.
